There are two or three hens, and two ducks who provide fresh eggs. Very fortunate to be surrounded by family. Another daughter and Terry’s sister live close by. Daughters Chantelle and Nakita also live on the farm. John works in another quarry, and also tends the farm. Amber lives with son John who resides on the property. Betty is Terry’s working dog who lives outside and rides along with him in the tractor. When not on guard, they are sweet, playful, and thoroughly devoted to Donna. Sam, Ellie, Zeena, Pugsley, Betty, and Amber are the dogs who live there and menace anyone who would be foolish enough to enter the garden without permission.
There are patterns and cycles here that bind these generations to the earth by a natural piety that is not found in any house of worship. Donna’s garden, a large square of grass in the front of the house, is surrounded by ancient stone walls on three sides, with a variety of roses and annuals lovingly tended by the mistress of the house. There is a stone quarry on the property, and a train that runs through his pastures. As I said, this man is both talented with his hands and entrepreneurial. He also leases work space and trailers for storage. He has converted barns and other out buildings to living spaces and supplements his income with rents.
Did I mention that he is capable of building and rebuilding. Terry designed and executed the plans for the conversion of the farmhouse to a comfortable and modern living space. Right outside of the door to the kitchen is a staircase that branches off into two foyers leading to the bedrooms and baths.
On the other side of the room is the original hearth that has a stove that is always on to keep the room warm in addition to being constantly ready to heat water for tea. Terry rebuilt it, taking down the wall that divided the house in two, creating a large room that is the sitting room at one end with a mantle that has etched into it the year 1627. They live in a farmhouse that has been in Terry’s family for three generations, a farmhouse whose foundation stones were laid in the 1200's. Donna is young enough to be one of my daughters, and I already miss her. Her intellect is as sharp as her tongue can be when someone behaves badly and deserves their comeuppance.

She is a perpetual motion dynamo, looking after her household, and a valued helpmate in the running of the farm and in the care of the one hundred plus heads of livestock that she helps move from pasture to pasture. Donna is the earth mother the source of stability. His pride are his tractors, and all the attachments that go with them.

He is enterprising, entrepreneurial, full of good humor, and ready to help anyone who needs something moved that is very heavy. Terry is a man who exudes the quiet dignity of someone who knows who he is, accepts who he is, and who knows what needs to be done and does it.
